Great news for patients taking Coumadin (Warfarin), who must monitor their INR's weekly or monthly. 

You can now learn to do self-monitoring at the Guardian/White Cross Pharmacy on Elgin St.  They sell the monitor and test strips and show you how to monitor your own INR, or you can do the tests in-store and the Pharmacist will monitor it with you, on the spot!  This will save you a lot of time and inconvenience waiting for results and following up with the doctors office. Their phone number is on the Health Directory under Pharmacies. In the alternate, if your doctor is no longer available for INR monitoring, any doctor can refer you to Dr. Pravin Shukle at 2948 Baseline Rd. He is a specialist and provides this service.

Appletree Welcomes new Pediatrician! - Dr. Susan Russell

Dr. Susan Russell is a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons certified Pediatrician with fellowship training in Neonatology and graduate studies in Genetics.  Dr Russell earned a BSc (hons) from McMaster University in Ontario before moving to Memorial University in Newfoundland.  While at Memorial, she completed medical school, a residency in Pediatrics as well as a MSc. in Genetic studies.  In order to acquire expertise in Neonatal intensive care and perinatal follow up, she completed one year of neonatal/perinatal fellowship at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia.

Dr. Russell is now living in Ottawa and has joined Appletree Medical Group on a full time basis.  She is happy to see all general pediatric referrals and has a special interest in asthma, genetics, prenatal counseling and developmental pediatrics.  Please fax consult requests to

Appletree Welcomes New Allergy Specialist

Dr. Pauline Kerr is certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Clinical Immunology & Allergy, and is Royal College Certified in Paediatrics. She is certified by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology and has also passed the American Pediatric Board Exams. 

She completed a Masters of Science degree at Queen’s University studying the immunology of drug resistant cancers and went on to medical school at McMaster University.  She completed her paediatric training at CHEO and her fellowship in Allergy & Immunology at McGill University. 

She has been a consultant in the CHEO asthma clinic and clinical lecturer at the University of Ottawa Medical School.  Her special interests include food allergy and asthma.  She is the principal investigator in ongoing asthma studies.  She attended Trinity College at the University of Toronto where she received her Hon. BSc.  She has received many awards and prizes for academic and research excellence.

She has trained and worked all over the world.  She spent 2 months in South Africa in paediatric health and epidemiology under a CIDA scholarship, and has worked in the Baffin Island, and Northern Ontario. She has done electives at Johns Hopkins University, in Phoenix, Arizona and Thunder Bay, Ontario.  She has a certificate in Field Epidemiology from Health Canada. 

Dr. Kerr grew up in Ottawa and will continue to build her consulting practice in Allergy and Asthma for children and adults. She will be starting at the Bank & Heron, 2948 Baseline and Kanata locations. Ask for a referral when seeing your doctor.  Current patients requiring follow up appointments may contact Appletree online or these clinics directly to arrange an appointment.

Dr. Kerr is fluent in both English and French.

The new HPV vaccine is now available in all of our medical centers. HPV causes genital warts, affecting thousands of men and women in Ottawa.  Some strains lead to Cervical Cancer in women.  Fact: 3 times as many women in Canada die each year of cervical cancer due to HPV than die from HIV. This new vaccine is a medical breakthrough and can prevent 75% of the cervical cancer causing virus strains. HPV is sexually transmitted and very common. Condoms do not protect well against HPV because of their location. The vaccine is available for sexually active, or pre-sexually active woman over the age of 9. (If you are a male or female and have HPV and haven't yet sought treatment, please see your doctor or visit one of our doctors right away for proper diagnosis and treatment. Appletree physicians Dr. Kabir and Dr. Habib are now offering the newest salvo in the treatment of mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knees. Durolane is an injectable 'visco-supplementation' treatment that reduces pain and improves function in a large percentage of patients. It is convenient and effective, only one injection required approximately every 6-9 months. The Durolane is covered by most extended benefit plans.
