What is an Allergy?
An Allergy is the condition of having an exaggerated response to an otherwise harmless substance, therefore causing your immune system to react.

WHAT are the common symptoms of an Allergy?
• RHINITIS - Itchy, congested, & runny nose
• CONJUNCTIVITIS - Itchy, watery, & red eyes
• ASTHMA - Wheezing, shortness of breath, or chronic dry cough.

Is it genetic?
People are believed to be predisposed towards the tendency to develop allergies. It has been shown, with a likelihood of 50%, that a child of two allergic parents will develop some form of allergic symptoms in their lifetime.

What is an Aroallergen?
An Aeroallergen is any airborne substance that causes an allergic reaction. Some examples include pollens, moulds, animal dander, and house dust mites. Allergy symptoms can occur perennially (all year long) or seasonally depending on the allergen.

How do I get tested for Allergies?
An allergy assessment skin test begins with a history of the problem, and includes a test done on the forearm to identify specifically which allergen is causing the problems. We test for the pollens of grasses, trees, weeds. and ragweed. We also test for dust, dust mites, moulds, and animal-associated allergies.

What can allergy shots do for me?
If a clearly identified allergy trigger is found, one option to prevent future symptoms is vaccination (allergy shots). Immunotherapy, commonly called allergy shots, is a safe and effective method to prevent repetitive allergic disease and can offer long-lasting relief and even cure for many people. The process of immunotherapy takes time. A patient receives an injection of the reactive allergen, first in small doses, then larger doses as the weeks go by. These doses desensitize the body to the allergens, and within 6 months the itching, sneezing, and wheezing may subside. After 3-5 cycles of treatment, the shots can be stopped completely, and the results may last your lifetime.

How much will this test cost me?
The allergy assessment is covered by OHIP. Most of the cost of treatment is also covered by OHIP.
