Travel Medicine

A travel medicine consultation prior to your departure is a key component of ensuring a safe and healthy trip. Ideally you should be seen soon after you have made your travel arrangements or at least within 4 weeks prior to departure. However, even last minute travelers can benefit from a consultation with a physician.

During your visit we will review your vaccination history, personal health history, itinerary, and planned activities to determine which vaccines you will need to keep you safe and healthy during your trip. All vaccines are stored on site for your convenience. Any vaccines provided by public health are provided at no cost to the patient. You will be provided a prescription for any medications that you need during your trip for Malaria prophylaxis or for altitude sickness.

The following travel vaccines are available during your consultation:
Yellow Fever
Twinrix (Hepatitis A/B combo vaccine)
Hepatits A
Hepatitis B
Typhoid Fever
Dukoral (for Cholera and Traveler’s Diarrhea)
Meningococcal Meningitis

Group Travel

If you have more than 6 people following the same itinerary and travelling within the same general time frame, a group consultation can be arranged.

After a group information session, each Traveler will then receive a one-on-one consultation with the physician to ensure that the recommended vaccines and medications specific to the individual vaccination and health history are provided. Larger groups can be accommodated with an on-site or off-site vaccination clinic at their office, church, or community centre, depending on who is organizing the trip.

Mountain Travel

If you are travelling to a high altitude area, be sure to speak with our doctor about the risk of altitude sickness. Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain illness occurs when a person travels from an area of low altitude to an area of high altitude in a short period of time. It commonly occurs above 2500 meters and can cause the following symptoms:
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Rapid Pulse
- Headache
- Shortness of Breath
- Swelling in the hands, feet, and face
- Nausea or lack of appetite
- Tingling
- Generally feeling unwell

Treatment options include descent to a lower elevation and/or medications to relieve symptoms. Severe cases of altitude sickness can result in hospitalization or even death so be sure to speak to our doctor about your options to ensure a safe and healthy trip!

For Employers

Sending an employee abroad for work can involve a lot of details. As we enter a more global business market, travel to international destinations is becoming a more commonplace occurrence for employees. Whether the employee is travelling for a short trip or a year-long transfer, if they are leaving Canada we can provide a preventative health assessment to ensure that they stay healthy and productive while abroad.

As part of our suite of Occupational Health Services, the Appletree Medical Group is able to provide you and your staff with all your required travel services as well as pre-travel comprehensive physical examinations, screening testing and lab work, at a location and time that is also convenient for both Employer and Employee.

With locations available across Ottawa and the GTA and direct billing options available, your staff will be better served and will appreciate the care provided by the employer.
